While there are many commercially available thyroid medications, these may not be the best option for every patient. Compounded thyroid replacement offers a more tailored approach to treating underacting thyroid. Compounding allows your pharmacist and physician to work together in order to create a medication that is right for you. This includes adjusting the strength, ingredients, and formulation to fit your specific needs.
Compounded T3 medication can be prepared in a time-release formula to avoid the hormone rollercoaster patients often experience on Cytomel® and similar preformed drugs. The thyroid hormone can be released continuously throughout the day.
Compounded formulations of levothyroxine are offered to meet hypothyroid patients’ individual needs. For example, this can help people who have allergies to certain dyes or excipients. It can allow specific types of flavoring to be added or offer a dose that is not commercially available.
Compounded thyroid medications can combine T3 and T4 into a single product, so your body can use the T3 and convert the T4 as needed.
Compounded thyroid medications usually include the following excipients: Ginger root powder, Acidophilus, Cellulose, Olive oil.
Unfortunately most insurance companies don't cover compounded medications
Compounding pharmacies sometimes use bio-identical thyroid hormones that are not from an animal source. In these preparations, T4 and T3 are synthesized in a laboratory to mimic the body's natural thyroid hormones. These preparations can be made in lactose-free powders or suspended in oil inside a gelatin capsule. Some compounding pharmacies also use desiccated thyroid hormones from the thyroid glands in pigs.

The side effects are the same than with the commercially available thyroid medications. If you take too much thyroid hormones, side effects can include: fast heartbeat, sensitivity to heat, hunger, nervousness and anxiety, shakiness, sweating, thin skin and brittle hair, tiredness.
I feel wonderful now. It took a long time to find the right dose. Compounded T3 is pretty amazing. Time release is the key.
